Weekly Notes April 30, 2018

LEAP testing has begun and will continue throughout this week. This test is given to any SES student who receives any form of scholarship; both public or privately funded. Parents, please be sure your student has a proper breakfast either at home or in school and gets enough rest. Teachers have been asked to be conscience of the amount of homework given this week. Sometime tomorrow, on OptionC, you will see the expectation(s) for classwork/tests this week. This becomes a balancing act for our teachers as not all students take this assessment. Thank you for your patience.

Tomorrow is May 1 and the end-of-school is speeding towards us. As you know, in order to make-up the days for our inclement weather, two days were added onto the end of the year. Attendance will be taken on those days but not put on a child’s record. Remember that nothing in regards to the original calendar such as exams, awards, etc. has changed. Please note that on 5/22, the last day of exams, the afternoon bus will leave SES at 10:45 am. Exams will be finished by that time. If you do not wish your child to leave that early, you must provide transportation for him/her at dismissal or they may attend After-Care. On 5/23 there will be a bus in the morning but not after school. There will be NO bus service on 5/24 & 5/25. I apologize for whatever inconvenience this may cause.

We have been diligently working on updating the emergency evacuation plan for the school. I have met with members of the local fire department and soon the sheriff’s office to try to ensure we have every planned for every type of emergency. The plan will be completed by the start of the upcoming school year. Staff will be given professional development on the procedures. We will begin practicing with the students soon after school begins. Practicing evacuations can be emotional. It is not our intention to frighten students but rather to make them aware of the importance of practicing and following rules. You will of course be notified when this will begin.

Friday is May Crowning. We will start with the procession from school followed by mass with the crowning after Fr. Matthew’s homily. All students will present flowers to Mary. This is such a beautiful ceremony. I hope you are able to attend.

The last day that students may test in AR to attend the field trip is 5/4. The last day they may test for their grade is 5/17. Remember that when a student has completed reading a book, they must take the corresponding AR test. Students may test before school in the morning, during recess, during library or whenever their teacher sees there is time. All teachers have at least 2 computers in their classrooms to help with this. Your child must tell the teacher he/she is ready to take the test.

A word about field trips. I would love to have our students go as many places as we could schedule. Sadly, we have lost the bus we were using from Ascension parish. Due to the cost and organization of insurance we must use charter buses. And I am sorry to say that due to constraints on our own budget, that is not very feasible. I am still investigating whether or not parents are allowed to transport students but that is truly frowned upon. In no way are students prohibited from taking field trips. The issue is transportation.

An action alert link has been created to direct you exclusively to the Senate Finance Committee pertaining to funding for Required Services and the School Lunch Salary Supplement Programs.  It is important to contact the Senate Finance Committee to let them know howimoprtant HB1 is to the schools in the Diocese of Baton Rouge.  It is important they continue to hear from us as they continue to deliberate. Please use this link  FULL FUNDING FOR NON PUBLIC SCHOOLS-YES HB1 to encourage the committee to vote in favor of HB1.
