Ash Wednesday is on February 14, 2018 and marks the start of a 46-day period of penitence and reflection leading up to Easter Sunday. The time between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday is also known as Lent. Why do we put ashes on our foreheads? The ashes are formed in the shape of a cross and symbolize penance, mourning and mortality. Christians display the ashes to express penance and faith. People who receive ashes are told "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”. The palms used in the previous year's Palm Sunday celebration are used to provide the ashes. They are mixed with holy water and symbolize penance, mourning and mortality. Palm Sunday is observed the week before Easter and marks the beginning of the Holy Week.
The typical question one is asked during Lent is “what are you giving up”? We tend to give up one or more of the things we love, usually food. I don’t know about you but depending on what you choose, it can be hard and I seldom achieve my goal. About 10 years ago I met a priest who spoke about doing something nice for someone every day. I remember him saying it’s all about making a sacrifice. It’s not always the same thing or person. It can be big or small and perhaps make the attempt to choose individuals that you don’t interact often or well with or don’t know at all. Any way you look at it, Lent is when Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice. What will you sacrifice?
Due to the 4 days that school was closed, the distribution of Progress Reports is being changed to Wednesday, February 21. This will give teachers a chance to complete whatever testing they have planned. You may also receive possible failure notices. Please pay attention to these notices and if you receive one, make an appointment with your child’s teacher(s) as soon as possible. Report cards will still be given out on the original scheduled date.
Please remember that there will be NO bus service Friday (2/9). Assumption Parish Schools have a ½ day of school. After-care will be in session as normal.
